THE TONY AWARDS JUNE 13, 2010
The Tony Awards show was excellent I thought, although I was very
disappointed that Barbara Cook didn't win, as I thought at 83, and
the rave reviews she got in Sondheim on Sondheim, she would win.
But she did not win. Memphis won for best original musical, and
La Cage Aux Folles won for best revival. Catherine Zeta-Jones was
completely taken by surprise when she won Best Actress in a Musical,
for her role in A Little Night Music, her first Broadway role.
Her husband, Michael Douglas, seemed very surprised
also. She was charming in her acceptance speech, spoken
in her British accent, noting that her parents had traveled all the
way from Wales for the event.
Viola Davis won for Fences, as did Denzel Washington. Best Actress and Best Actor in a play.
Scarlett Johansson was very humble in her acceptance for her featured
performance in A View From The Bridge.
It was fabulous to see Helen Mirren, looking as glamorous as she
always does. I thought the camera work was superb, and the pacing
moved along without having to shorten the acceptance speeches.
I think everyone had a marvelous time, as you can see from the
pictures. I love Broadway, and love the awards shows.
It's all good.
And the winners are:
